As the sun sets on another summer, Summit High School's boys golf team is gearing up for a season that promises to be an exciting and challenging ride. With the new school year just around the corner, the team has already hit the ground running, hosting tryouts and preparing for their first official tournament.
Head coach Zach Dobrota, with a keen eye for talent, is optimistic about the season ahead. "I believe we have a strong and seasoned group of golfers this year," he shares. "The seniors, in particular, are a force to be reckoned with, and I'm eager to see them step up and lead the team."
The team's roster boasts a diverse mix of grades, with a total of 15 boys representing all four levels. Among them are standout players like Parker Gray, Hunter Plummer, and Sawyer Coffman, who are not only eyeing state qualifications but also harboring aspirations for a future in golf beyond high school. Other notable names to watch out for include Jack Tobias, Jagger Roberts, Jaxx Roberts, and Fisher Woodard, all of whom have the potential to shine and make their mark.
"The beauty of this team is that every player has a chance to shine," Dobrota explains. "With such a closely matched group, playing time will be earned, and every tournament will be a fresh opportunity for someone to step up and secure their spot."
However, the road ahead is not without its challenges. Summit High's boys will be facing off against some of the toughest competition from Front Range high schools, where golf facilities and longer seasons create a breeding ground for exceptional talent. "The Front Range schools have an advantage in terms of access and resources," Dobrota points out. "Their golfers have year-round practice, and we'll be facing some truly exceptional players."
One such challenging tournament awaits the Tigers at the Air Force Academy's Eisenhower Golf Club, where the boys will be tested to their limits. "The Eisenhower Blue course is notorious for its tough greens," Dobrota reveals. "Our players will need to be at the top of their game to manage their short shots and putts."
But amidst the challenges, there's an underlying message of fun and enjoyment. Dobrota emphasizes, "While we have high expectations and a competitive spirit, the ultimate goal is for these boys to have a great time and not be too hard on themselves. They're students first, and we want them to embrace the joy of the game."
